Equipment Required

  • Something to dig with, a stick or small garden fork
  • Secateurs
  • Baking tray
  • Coffee grinder
  • Jar for the coffee

Recipe Instructions

To be prepared at home, prior to your adventures.

  1. Wash the roots thoroughly to remove all the mud, also a good opportunity to pull off some of the root hairs.
  2. Hang the roots, or leave on a window sill in direct sunlight.  Leave to dry for approximately a day.
  3. Heat oven on gas mark 6/200 degrees.
  4. With the secateurs cut the root in to 1cm chunks, and lay on the baking tray.
  5. Place in the oven for approximately 30min, depends how dry the root is.
  6. Remove from the oven once they are becoming hard and dried out.
  7. Grind in coffee grinder to a rough texture, and replace in the oven.
  8. Remove once the grounds become darker, like a cup of coffee (with milk that is)
  9. Repeat grinding so the grounds become fine and replace in the oven for about 5 min, until slightly darker still.
  10. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.
  11. Once cooled, you can put it in the jar.
