Rope Techniques for Scrambling

Advanced rope work for scrambling in the mountains when the going gets tough!

The True Mountaineer

Basic rock climbing techniques and rope protection (using short roping techniques) will be taught on these scrambles. The aim is to give you the confidence to protect both yourself and a second whilst scrambling with the aid of a rope. The course and routes selected are flexible to take into account weather conditions, individual aims and personal abilities.

Content of the day includes:

  • Planning your mountain day
  • Route finding and assessing risk
  • Movement over the terrain
  • Guidebooks, maps and the grading system
  • Choice of climbing equipment
  • Placing protection
  • How to build belays and climbing protection
  • Emergency procedures

Previous experience

Scrambling at grade 1 and a head for heights is essential. A basic understanding of how to belay, put on a harness and helmet is preferable. A reasonable level of fitness will ensure you get the most out of your days, as these are long mountain days in rugged rocky terrain.
